What Home Plate Teachers Say
Chefs and home cooks share what working with Polly meant for their teaching.
“I was already a confident chef when I worked with Polly, but teaching everyday people how to cook in their own homes was a completely different skill. I knew how to cook like a chef, and I tended to teach like one, too. Polly helped me understand how to slow down, simplify, and explain cooking in a way that real people could actually use in their personal lives. She taught me how to make cooking feel approachable, practical, and enjoyable for home cooks. That has made me not only a better teacher, but a better communicator.”
— Chef Ian
“When I began working with Polly, I already had strong experience as a chef and had cooked in some fine restaurants. But teaching people in their own homes required a different approach. Polly showed me how to take what I knew professionally and make it practical for home cooks—how to scale recipes for a small family, prep classes so students could follow along easily, and give clear guidelines they could use again on their own. She helped me become a better teacher by showing me how to make good food feel possible in a real home kitchen.”
— Chef Martin
“I came to Polly with a strong culinary background and years of experience teaching in respected culinary schools. I was used to teaching chefs how to work in professional kitchens, and at first, I’ll admit it was difficult for me to adjust to a different kind of teaching. But Polly had created one of the first professionally run cooking schools on Long Island, and it quickly became clear that she truly knew what she was doing. She helped me see that teaching real people to cook at home is very different from training chefs for a busy kitchen. I came to appreciate her style, her standards, and her lead in showing students how to cook with confidence in their own homes.”
— Chef Dennis
“I had always been a good home cook for my family and the people I loved, but teaching cooking was a completely different experience. Polly helped me understand that before I could teach others well, I needed to strengthen some of my own knife skills, preparation habits, and step-by-step procedures. With her guidance, I learned how to organize a class, explain things clearly, and teach children the basics in a way that felt joyful and encouraging. Polly helped me take my love of cooking and turn it into wonderful classes that students could enjoy, understand, and bring back into their own homes.”
— John, Home Cook

A Passion for Cooking
Meet Polly Talbott

Hello, I’m Polly
I started out baking with my grandmother as a little girl, and I have spent my life in kitchens: managing restaurants, styling food for photography, and, for 22 years, owning and directing a cooking school right here in Lynbrook, New York. Today I love helping cooks, chefs and dietitians turn what they already know into classes of their own, with patience, encouragement and a lot of laughter. When I’m not cooking, you’ll find me ballroom dancing, biking, traveling, or in the kitchen with my grandchildren, Leo and Emilia. I’d love to hear what you hope to teach.
